REALLY wish I hadn't waited until I had finished the main series to read all of these。 These short stories provide sooooo much valuable context and background for the events and characters。 I only just finished the book, and I'm already contemplating a reread of the entire series so that I can intersperse these stories in their proper places。 REALLY wish I hadn't waited until I had finished the main series to read all of these。 These short stories provide sooooo much valuable context and background for the events and characters。 I only just finished the book, and I'm already contemplating a reread of the entire series so that I can intersperse these stories in their proper places。 。。。more

These stories fill in some blanks in the Expanse universe。 Not really vital to the story, but the insights provided are trike interesting。 The early ones all got worked in to the tv series, and the later ones provide some answers as to what happened off screen。

I read this slowly, as it is the last bit of new Expanse content I'll likely ever get (and, incidentally, the new story is fantastic)。 Each story has an author's note at the end and on the audio these author's notes are narrated by either Dan or Ty。 My favorite story was The Churn which surprises no one。 <3 I read this slowly, as it is the last bit of new Expanse content I'll likely ever get (and, incidentally, the new story is fantastic)。 Each story has an author's note at the end and on the audio these author's notes are narrated by either Dan or Ty。 My favorite story was The Churn which surprises no one。 <3 。。。more

Great compilation of The Expanse short fiction, all of which I had previously read except for the last story。 I had actually forgotten many of the details from the early stories, including some of the plot elements, so going through them again, this time in one hardback volume as opposed to digging around the internet, was wonderful。 I enjoyed 'The Sins of Our Fathers' too, it makes a fine last statement for the series。 The Expanse was the best science fiction I have read in a long time。 What a Great compilation of The Expanse short fiction, all of which I had previously read except for the last story。 I had actually forgotten many of the details from the early stories, including some of the plot elements, so going through them again, this time in one hardback volume as opposed to digging around the internet, was wonderful。 I enjoyed 'The Sins of Our Fathers' too, it makes a fine last statement for the series。 The Expanse was the best science fiction I have read in a long time。 What a treat。 。。。more

Any fan who's read the series needs to read this to fill in some important background on several of the key characters, particularly Fred Anderson, Bobby and Amos。 The story Strange Dogs is an interesting expansion of the TV series episode of exo-Resurrection with Cara。 I wish we had more backstory on the bad guys like Duarte and Ineros。 The last story, Sins of our Fathers, is the only hint of an epilogue we'll get after a book #9, I guess。 The authors two page commentary after each story was r Any fan who's read the series needs to read this to fill in some important background on several of the key characters, particularly Fred Anderson, Bobby and Amos。 The story Strange Dogs is an interesting expansion of the TV series episode of exo-Resurrection with Cara。 I wish we had more backstory on the bad guys like Duarte and Ineros。 The last story, Sins of our Fathers, is the only hint of an epilogue we'll get after a book #9, I guess。 The authors two page commentary after each story was really fascinating and helpful。 。。。more

Seven short stories in Expanse series that were sold on Kindle, now in hardback。All are interesting some deal with underbelly of the series and the best ones give more depth to characters we've known about, in particular Amos Burton in the story titled "The Churn" and Fred Johnson in the story "The Butcher of Anderson Station", which tells how he got that title, not what you expect。 Also the authors have a brief background of the story after each segment。 Great way to give the series a send off。 Seven short stories in Expanse series that were sold on Kindle, now in hardback。All are interesting some deal with underbelly of the series and the best ones give more depth to characters we've known about, in particular Amos Burton in the story titled "The Churn" and Fred Johnson in the story "The Butcher of Anderson Station", which tells how he got that title, not what you expect。 Also the authors have a brief background of the story after each segment。 Great way to give the series a send off。 。。。more

I read this newly published collection of all the Expanse short works just after finishing the entire series。 I found it to be really enjoyable。 The stories are cleverly augment what we saw in the books, and I discovered that some of the material in the television adaptation came from the short works, not just the novels。

Very interesting tangent from the greater Expanse series。 "James SA Corey" don't build to the Expanse story - so this isn't for you really if you expect that。 Rather, it gives you closure on some open story lines, and the two authors get the chance to flex some classical sci-fi-style stories while using the characters and events they've built from the series as a talking piece or background or foreground。I really liked Leviathan Wakes and the noir style that the authors told the story, and while Very interesting tangent from the greater Expanse series。 "James SA Corey" don't build to the Expanse story - so this isn't for you really if you expect that。 Rather, it gives you closure on some open story lines, and the two authors get the chance to flex some classical sci-fi-style stories while using the characters and events they've built from the series as a talking piece or background or foreground。I really liked Leviathan Wakes and the noir style that the authors told the story, and while they do try different story archetypes for following books, they never seem to get the strong stereotype type story that Leviathan Wakes started everything with。In Memory's Legion, every story tells a valid lore story while reading like something you'd find in Asimov's I, Robot such as Strange Dogs or maybe even Harlan Ellison's collection such as Paolo Cortazar's experience in Vital Abyss。 Meanwhile, Daniel and Ty weave some of the most deeply human characters I have ever had the pleasure of reading into such short stories。 。。。more

I'm not the biggest fan of short stories, but this collection of short stories from the Expanse is extremely well done。 Several give insights/back stories to primary or secondary characters in the series, or events of importance to the 9-book series。 None are essential to the story as a greater whole, but it's an enjoyable read and a good way to get a little extra Expanse in after completing the series。 I'm not the biggest fan of short stories, but this collection of short stories from the Expanse is extremely well done。 Several give insights/back stories to primary or secondary characters in the series, or events of importance to the 9-book series。 None are essential to the story as a greater whole, but it's an enjoyable read and a good way to get a little extra Expanse in after completing the series。 。。。more

Disappointing collection of stories in that nothing really stood out excepting the Epstein drive discovery one and I had read that previously。

A good collection, offering several reflections on crime and morality while filling in the backstories of several significant characters。 I wish I'd read several of these when they first came out (two were directly adapted in the show), but they're all good, and the last provides both a window into life after the events of the final novel and an application of the lessons of the series as a whole。 A good collection, offering several reflections on crime and morality while filling in the backstories of several significant characters。 I wish I'd read several of these when they first came out (two were directly adapted in the show), but they're all good, and the last provides both a window into life after the events of the final novel and an application of the lessons of the series as a whole。 。。。more

Memory’s Legion is a collection of The Expanse short stories that were already released, and one new one。 When I got this collection, I reread The Butcher of Anderson Station and The Vital Abyss, saving the new Sins of our Fathers for last。My memories, at least, were sparked by looking over these short stories again。 Every single entry in The Expanse series was somewhere between very good and incredible。 The world has never had a science fiction series of this length and quality。

As a neat little postscript, this is a collection of all the associated novellas which have spun out of The Expanse series。 As a general review, this is a solid collection。 I've not read any of these novellas before, and it is nice to have them all gathered into a single volume。 The biggest issue with this is that some of these stories are very clearly designed to be read before, or after, particular books。 Hopefully, it will work as a companion piece for any future readers of the series to have As a neat little postscript, this is a collection of all the associated novellas which have spun out of The Expanse series。 As a general review, this is a solid collection。 I've not read any of these novellas before, and it is nice to have them all gathered into a single volume。 The biggest issue with this is that some of these stories are very clearly designed to be read before, or after, particular books。 Hopefully, it will work as a companion piece for any future readers of the series to have an easy reference points for the main books。 As it is, some of these stories had significantly less weight because certain plot elements have been spoiled in the books, or the equally superb TV show。 All of that said, because I am a huge nerd for this series, I want to do a short review for each of these stories。 DriveAs an introduction to The Expanse, this is a solid entry。 It's the shortest story of the collection and helps to offer some background to the events in the first book。 This novella in particular was adapted in the TV show, but it still managed to carry a lot of heart。 Like most of James S。 A。 Corey's writing, the central character is well done, and it's always fun to see a bit more Mars。 The Butcher of Anderson StationThis may be my favourite of the collection, it certainly ranks in the top three。 Chad Coleman did a great job as Fred Johnson in the TV show and his characterisation seems to bleed through into this。 There is a wonderful arc here about responsibility, and a far more nuanced look at moral questions than such topics typically deliver。 Again, it's not as long as some of the later stories, but it works well and Fred's character arc here is really compelling。 Gods of RiskThe whole collection has brief author notes at the end of each story, and the notes for this story were really funny。 The title is wildly over the top and the authors recognise this。 But at its heart, this is a neat story about people changing。 You get new perspectives on characters you love as readers, and more Mars。 Which is always fun。 This story starts pretty slowly, but the conclusion has a few effective heroic moments。 Again, it has been adapted for Series 4 of the TV show, but it was cool to see the ways it diverged from its original form。 The ChurnI first heard about the novellas because of this story。 It's a key backstory to one of the best characters in the books。 It is also incredibly dark, as would be appropriate for this character。 Alongside Butcher this is also one of my favourites。 One of the nice things about these novellas is seeing the authors flex a little more literary creativity, and this story is full of it。 There is a different style here which sometimes takes away from some of the tension, but generally it's fantastically done。 The Vital AbyssProbably one of the weakest stories in this collection。 It is essentially a villain origin story, and I've never been big on those。 But it fills in a few important gaps for the later books and that's helpful。 On the whole, it falls into a couple of troupes which I'm not fond of and has a bit of a weak ending。 However, it is cool to see the authors play around with style a little more。 Strange DogsAnother dark story from James S。 A。 Corey。 For all it's realism, and hard sci-fi, the authors really do know how to pitch a good bit of horror。 I mean that in the more general way than just 'scary', and the authors note at the end helped illuminate what they were going for here。 All of the final three stories were written to be read with the final three books, and this would serve as an excellent prelude to book 7。 It sets up a critically important plot point for later and certainly helps the reader feel like this is a better foreshadowed moment than it did in the main book。 AuberonThe Expanse books have a real knack for good villains。 This novella does a nice twist, by giving us a very similar set up to a villain we met in the later books, but with enough wiggle room to see what could have been。 I do like it when stories play on the idea of villains-in-different-contexts and there are a few great twists in this one。 At its heart it is a crime story, about corruption and space politics。 The Sins of Our FathersSo, this is the new one。 The books ended with, for readers, a significant plot thread left loose。 James S。 A。 Corey have written this as a treat for fans to include in the collection, and I do think it acts nicely as an epilogue。 On top of other issues which get resolved, I enjoyed seeing how the story dealt with the fallout from the series' conclusion。 It has a little less thematic weight than other short stories here, and the ending doesn't quite feel like an ending, but it still all hangs together nicely。 On the whole, a worthwhile purchase for fans of the books, but not necessary for most readers。 It has some great stories included, and offers enough insight into the series to be a fun, enjoyable read。 。。。more

I reviewed each individual story for more clarity, but overall this is a good read for any Expanse fan。 The most important story is probably Sins of Our Fathers, which is now the true finale of the series (and a very compelling and satisfying story in its own right)。 Other notable stories included are Auberon, The Vital Abyss, and The Churn。 The other 4 are good in their own ways, with some being more interesting than others, depending on your character preferences。 I wish there were more author I reviewed each individual story for more clarity, but overall this is a good read for any Expanse fan。 The most important story is probably Sins of Our Fathers, which is now the true finale of the series (and a very compelling and satisfying story in its own right)。 Other notable stories included are Auberon, The Vital Abyss, and The Churn。 The other 4 are good in their own ways, with some being more interesting than others, depending on your character preferences。 I wish there were more authors' notes, however; that was the one part that separated this book from the individual novellas and short stories。 There is one for each book, but they are so short that it's almost disheartening even starting the note, just to know it will be over as soon as it starts。 。。。more
